Treesense now partners with Mainzer Stadtwerke AG and Wohnbau Mainz GmbH

Together with Mainzer Stadtwerke AG and Wohnbau Mainz GmbH, we have now launched the project “Smart Watering of Trees”. For this purpose, our cloud-based sensors Treesense Pulse were attached to 10 young trees distributed in 4 different areas of the city of Mainz. The goal is to monitor the watering needs of young trees during the season and hence discover potentials for a city-wide network.

About our partners

The Innovation Management Department of Mainzer Stadtwerke AG is currently developing a city-wide LoRaWAN infrastructure. In simple terms, it is a special radio network that can transmit small amounts of data even over long distances with low energy consumption. Treesense Pulse uses LoRaWAN to continuously transmit the gathered data. Wohnbau Mainz GmbH is the largest housing provider in Mainz with around 10,500 residential units and manages the green spaces independently with its own staff.

Smart Watering of Trees

In the course of climate change, the watering of newly planted trees is becoming increasingly relevant. In the future, sensor technology will enable this to be done as closely as possible to the tree’s requirements. Our solution is now being tested with sensors at a total of ten representative tree sites belonging to Wohnbau in Mainz. Among others, there are five trees in Mombach, two each on Hartenberg and Lerchenberg, and one in Gonsenheim.

How Treesense helps

Together with the innovation department of Mainzer Stadtwerke AG, we provide an infrastructure that also includes the trees of the Smart City Mainz. Treesense Pulse communicates via LoRaWAN with the servers of Mainzer Stadtwerke AG. The data is then visualized in the Treesense Cloud, enabling Mainzer Wohnbau’s irrigation teams to adapt their watering activities to the actual needs of the trees.

Next steps

The solution is now tested in a pilot project to evaluate whether it can be scaled to a city-wide application. The impact of our solution will be compared to traditional irrigation methods with regards to number of irrigation cycles and route efficiency. In October, the teams will sit together to discuss the results of the project.
