Because when a tree dries out, it’s not just bad for the climate: Branches that break off are a danger to residents and road traffic. Heavily damaged trees are therefore cut off. In the Berlin district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, this year alone, 2,000 of the 42,000 trees will be cut down, according to estimates by the tree management department of the Straßen- und Grünflächenamt. There are not enough resources for this, criticizes district mayor Monika Herrmann. In addition, trees would be kept alive that could not survive in the medium term in their current locations.”
